The other day, I had an interesting conversation with some co-workers about listening to people's opinions about you and the things you do. My co-workers were a bit surprised when I said I stopped caring about what people say about in the 3rd grade. It does sound a little suprising, but it is true. I decide at an early age to really only care about what someone has to say about if he/she is someone close to. Everybody has opinions and if you get caught up in those ideas, well then you are not being true to yourself. I know who I am and if you want to talk different, well then that is on you.
See I think this is an attitude that everyone needs to adopt. I've known too many people who go out of their way to always impress people, and it just doesn't make sense to me. I value the opinions of the people closest to me and in my close circle, and if you aren't in those groups... feel free to have your opinion, but understand that I might not listen. One of my favorite records ever is "True To The Game" by Ice cube. Obviously the ideas in the verses don't relate to my life, but the overall idea of be true to who you are always stood out to me. The idea of understand who you are and be happy with that was something I chose to adopt in my life. I'm Eric 365, man.
No matter how hard you try or how many opinions you listen to... you can't change who you are. In the end you just have to accept that and run with it. I really do believe that if I hadn't adopted this idea, I would have been fucked up in the head. When you are the new kid and overweight, you can be an easy target, but I made it to 26 by only caring about those closest to me whose opinion I respect. Thats how it should be... otherwise life get more complicated than it needs to be.
